One of the first things people ask at a tradeshow is if I think it was a success. This was the first ASIS in quite a few years that they got it right. This was the best ASIS in several years running. Why?

I think it has to do with where the event is being held, for starters. And, in 2017, ASIS will get it right again by having Dallas host the event. Not just because I live here, but Dallas will get it right every time a new group comes to the city.

Back to Orlando. Here are a few things that ASIS 2016 got right. The Orange County Convention Center is a first-class facility. There is never enough time on the show floor to grab a bit to eat, but as far as convention centers go, at least there was a choice. I grabbed a couple of lunches; one with Courtney Pedersen of Milestone and Kim Rahfaldt, AMAG, and there were choices.

Bus services to and from the convention center were amazing. Who wouldn't want to ride on a bus owned by Mickey Mouse?

Hotels, well, they are well worn family friendly accommodations, but otherwise not bad. One thing people in Orlando know well, is customer service, except for the one person who stole the door handle off our company car.

Rain. Florida has plenty of rain, but nothing that a $12 umbrella couldn't handle for a few minutes.

New products. There were any number of new technologies that warrant further review.

Talkaphone brought their wall mount S Emergency Call Station, used for remote and high-risk areas. It is an attention-getting LED Blue Light is inside a polycarbonate housing. The faceplate is illuminated at all times by an LED panel light and it is a vandal-resistant marine grade 316 stainless steel construction. Oh, it is ADA compliant.

I met a new company with technology able to track, assess and respond to intruders in real time. Dynetics sees the future of perimeter surveillance. This product, GroundWare, has the realiability without typical false alarms as the software is continuously "learning" the environment in all weather conditions and lighting.

We're going to hear more about Dahua Technology USA as they bring a high-value, total security solution to North America. Yes, they are from China, but it is a private company who gets the understanding of personal relationships to enhance the customer experience.

I'm looking forward to another terrific ASIS in 2017. Let me say it first, Welcome to Dallas.
